A place to belong: Introducing Sen Taekwon-do at Zen Combat Academy

At Zen Combat Academy, we have met children and families who want to take part in sport but have struggled to find a place where they feel understood. A busy class can feel overwhelming. Instructions may need to be given differently. A child might need more time to settle in, or a parent may worry that their child will be judged for learning at a different pace.
We want to help change that.
Our new Sen-kwondo class is a dedicated SEN Taekwon-Do session built around a simple belief: every child deserves the chance to enjoy martial arts and feel that they belong. We are creating a space where children can learn without being compared with anyone else.
What are we trying to achieve?
We want children with special educational needs and disabilities to have access to the same opportunities, encouragement and sense of achievement as any other student. That means listening to each child and their family, understanding what helps them take part, and adapting our approach where needed.
For one student, success might mean joining in with a whole session. For another, it might mean walking into the room, trying a new movement or feeling comfortable enough to return the following week. Those steps matter. We will celebrate progress at the pace that is right for each child.
Martial arts gives us a way to work on movement, balance and coordination. Just as importantly, it can give children a chance to make friends, express themselves, build confidence and discover what they can do. We want the academy to be a place where they are known for their strengths, interests and personality, not defined by a diagnosis.
Supporting the whole family
We know that signing up for a new activity can take courage from parents and carers too. You know your child best, and we want to learn from you. If there are communication preferences, sensory needs or ways we can help your child feel more comfortable, please tell us.
Some children may be ready to join the group straight away. Others may benefit from beginning with one-to-one training and moving towards a group class when they feel ready. There is no single route that suits everyone.
Our instructors have experience supporting children with different needs, and several have undertaken Makaton training as we continue to improve how we communicate and teach. Inclusive training is something we are committed to developing, with families and students helping us understand what works.
Building something bigger
Sen-kwondo is one part of our wider aim to make sport more accessible in Bideford and beyond. Through Zen Combat Academy and our work developing Ripple Pathway Initiative, we want to help remove barriers that keep people with disabilities and additional needs out of training. In time, our ambition is to help other sports clubs become more inclusive too.
That work begins with the children in front of us: making sure each one is welcomed, listened to and given a genuine opportunity to take part.
Sen-kwondo meets every Saturday, 4:00–5:00 pm, at Zen Combat Academy, Unit 1b Fletcher Industrial Estate, Bideford EX39 3EU. Sessions cost £10, plus yearly insurance.
If you are wondering whether the class could be right for your child, we would love to hear from you. Tell us about them, ask us anything, and together we can find a comfortable first step.
