IITA Inclusive Martial Arts at Zen Combat Academy
A place where every ability is recognised and every achievement matters
Zen Combat Academy is proud to serve as the United Kingdom National Governing Organisation for the International Inclusive Taekwon-Do Association, known as IITA.
This is more than a title. It represents a responsibility to help shape the future of inclusive martial arts across the United Kingdom and to create genuine opportunities for children, young people and adults who may previously have felt excluded from traditional sport.
Together, Zen Combat Academy and IITA are working towards a future where disability, neurodivergence or a health condition never determines whether someone belongs in martial arts.
We believe every person should have the opportunity to step onto the mat, develop their abilities, earn recognised grades, represent their Academy and, where appropriate, experience the pride of competition.
What Is IITA?
The International Inclusive Taekwon-Do Association was established to change the way disability and additional needs are understood within martial arts.
Its purpose is not simply to allow people with disabilities to take part. It is to provide them with a respected, structured and meaningful pathway through which they can learn, progress, achieve and compete.
IITA recognises that every student is different. Some may require physical techniques to be adapted, while others may need additional processing time, visual instruction, reduced sensory demands or a more gradual introduction to training.
The standard may be adapted, but the value of the achievement is never reduced.
Every grade earned, skill developed and challenge overcome represents genuine progress and deserves genuine recognition.
Our Shared Values
The work of IITA and Zen Combat Academy is built upon four central principles:
Inclusion
Every student should feel that they belong from the moment they enter the Academy.
Inclusion is not about asking a person to fit into an existing system. It is about creating a training environment that understands the individual and removes unnecessary barriers to participation.
Dignity
Every student is treated with patience, respect and compassion.
We speak to the person, not simply to their diagnosis or disability. We recognise their strengths, listen to their needs and support them without making them feel different or less capable.
Safety
Inclusive coaching requires knowledge, planning and awareness.
Training methods, equipment, communication and class structures may be adapted to help students participate safely and confidently while still receiving meaningful and progressive instruction.
Progress
Success will not look the same for every student.
For one person, progress may mean earning a belt or competing at an international event. For another, it may mean entering the training area independently, following a complete lesson or learning to manage anxiety in a group environment.
Every one of those achievements matters.
Understanding the Individual
Zen Combat Academy supports students with a broad range of disabilities, conditions and additional needs, including:
-
Autism
-
ADHD
-
Sensory processing differences
-
Learning disabilities
-
Physical disabilities
-
Mobility difficulties
-
Long-term health conditions
-
Chronic pain
-
Anxiety
-
PTSD
-
Mental health conditions
-
Communication differences
-
Additional educational or behavioural needs
A diagnosis alone does not tell us everything we need to know about a student.
Before deciding how someone should train, we take the time to understand the individual: how they communicate, how they process information, what may cause distress, what helps them feel safe and what they would personally like to achieve.
Where appropriate, we work closely with parents, guardians, carers, schools and other professionals to create a consistent and supportive training experience.
How We Adapt Our Teaching
Inclusive martial arts should never be a reduced version of a mainstream class.
It should be thoughtful, informed coaching that gives each student a fair opportunity to develop.
Depending on the needs of the individual, our instructors may:
-
Adapt techniques, movements, stances or drills
-
Use clear and direct language
-
Provide visual demonstrations
-
Break techniques into smaller stages
-
Allow additional processing time
-
Use calm and consistent repetition
-
Reduce unnecessary sensory distractions
-
Introduce equipment gradually
-
Provide predictable lesson structures
-
Offer additional breaks when required
-
Use alternative grading methods
-
Deliver individual or small-group sessions
-
Adapt the training environment to improve accessibility
These adaptations do not remove challenge. They make the challenge achievable, meaningful and appropriate for the student.
More Than Participation
Our goal is not simply to provide a place where people with disabilities can attend a martial arts class.
Our goal is to provide a pathway.
Students can work towards recognised grades, develop technical skills, improve their confidence and, where suitable, progress towards demonstrations, competition and representative opportunities.
Through IITA, inclusive athletes can experience the same sense of identity, achievement and belonging that martial artists around the world have valued for generations.
They are not standing at the side of the class.
They are martial artists.
Leading Inclusive Martial Arts in the United Kingdom
As the United Kingdom National Governing Organisation for IITA, Zen Combat Academy has a role that extends beyond our own students and classes.
We are helping to develop a national network of instructors and Academies that share the same commitment to inclusion, dignity, safety and meaningful progression.
Our aim is to work with like-minded martial arts schools across the country, providing guidance, education and recognised pathways so that more families can access suitable inclusive training within their own communities.
We are also proud to be preparing to host the first IITA British Open Championships for Disabilities in 2027.
This event will provide athletes with disabilities and additional needs with an opportunity to compete in an environment created around their safety, dignity and abilities.
It will be more than a competition. It will be a celebration of courage, progress and everything these athletes have worked to achieve.
Experience That Makes a Difference
Zen Combat Academy has spent many years teaching inclusive martial arts and working individually with students who require additional support.
Our experience includes working with schools, families, community organisations and local authorities to provide training for students who may not have been able to access conventional sporting environments.
Several of our young champions are diagnosed with conditions including autism, ADHD and PTSD. Their achievements demonstrate what can happen when talented young people are given the right environment, appropriate coaching and someone who genuinely believes in their potential.
Their success is not defined by a diagnosis.
It is defined by their commitment, courage and ability.
A Place Where Families Feel Understood
For many parents and carers, finding a suitable activity can be exhausting.
They may have experienced judgement, exclusion or environments where their child’s needs were misunderstood. They may have been told that their child was too disruptive, too anxious, too difficult to teach or unable to take part.
At Zen Combat Academy, we begin from a different position.
We ask what the student can do, what support they require and how we can help them move forward.
We cannot promise that every day will be easy. Meaningful progress takes time, trust and consistency. What we can promise is that every student will be treated as an individual, listened to and given the opportunity to succeed.
We want families to read this page and feel something they may not have felt in another sporting environment:
“They understand. We will be welcomed here.”
The Future of Inclusive Martial Arts
IITA and Zen Combat Academy share a belief that inclusive training should not be treated as an additional service or an afterthought.
It should be recognised as an essential part of the future of martial arts.
We are proud to be helping lead that change in the United Kingdom—supporting athletes, educating instructors, building inclusive Academies and creating new opportunities for people who deserve to be seen, respected and celebrated.
This is not martial arts with limitations.
This is martial arts built around possibility.
